The industry, in the city of Rio Bravo, as much as in the border metropolitan area represents an important source of income for the population, and in it is located a significant portion of the PEA. The maquiladora as well as the construction industry are prominent and have a tremendous impact in the community. The maquiladora industry focuses primarily on the manufacturing of clothes and footwear, ranking second in the assembling of automotive products and treatment of scrap metal (iron, receives, bronze and aluminum) and textile waste.

Since 1965, the impact of the maquiladora industry has been a determining factor in the community’s economy. According to studies made on behalf of the University of Texas and the cities of Reynosa, Rio Bravo and McAllen, the annual economic impact of the maquiladora industry is approximately 824 million dollars.

Thirteen maquiladoras are located in the city of Rio Bravo that specialize in exporting, which employ more than 3.000 and generate a special economic tax of more than 380 million pesos annually.
