Weslaco Independent School District (WISD)

The 2002-2003 school year was the sixth consecutive year that Weslaco Independent School District (WISD) was named a “Recognized School District” by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) – 1996 – 2008. The designation is based on 80 percent mastery of the Texas Assessment of Academic Skills (TAAS) tests in math, reading, writing, science and social studies. WISD serves about 14,000 students and is made up of a pre-kindergarten campus, ten elementary schools, four intermediate, three middle schools and three high schools.

Through concurrent enrollment, high school students may take college courses for college credit. Career and technology education courses allow high school students to prepare for the workforce. All WISD students have access to the latest educational programs and research tools, such as the Internet and a variety of software. With computers in every classroom, students are kept a breast of technological advances.

Idea Public Schools

IDEA Public Schools’ approach to education is one focused on college preparation for all children.

IDEA Public Schools operate under a set of principles known as “The Seven Rs,” which govern behavior, curriculum, and culture at the school.

All IDEA students are on the college track, participating in International Baccalaureate curriculum and taking Advanced Placement courses. All IDEA schools are in the process of pursuing authorization with the International Baccalaureate organization.

University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA)

As a component of the University of Texas System, the University of Texas-Pan American is ranked as the 10th largest university in the state. UTPA is housed in nearby Edinburg, TX and currently offers 55 bachelors, 41 masters, 2 doctoral degrees along with one cooperative doctorate degree with the University of Texas at Austin. The college of business administration at UTPA is an accredited institution by AACSB International and it is one of the colleges that offers one two doctoral degrees at the university with an emphasis in International Business. The college of science and engineering at the university offers Bachelor’s of Science degrees in Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Electrical, Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering along with Mathematics, and Physics. The college houses three engineering departments and the department of computer science in a state of the art engineering building. UTPA ranks second in the nation in the number of bachelor’s degrees and fifth in the number of master’s degrees awarded to Hispanics.

Since 1993, STCC has been the RGV’s newest and fastest growing higher education institutions. STCC offers 81 degree and certificate options including Associate of Art degrees in 13 fields of study, Associate of Science degrees in 7 fields of study, 24 Associate of Applied Science degrees and 37 certificate programs. With a campus in Weslaco and approximately 3,725 students, the Mid-Valley campus offers students who would like to continue their education with the opportunity to study in fields such as accounting, business administration, child care and development and teacher education preparation.

TSTC-Harlingen is an independently accredited institution offering affordable educational opportunity in a residential setting. TSTC-Harlingen offers 29 options for the Associate of Applied Science degrees in areas ranging from agricultural technology to computer drafting & design technology to emergency medical technology. TSTC also offers two types of programs designed to help meet the individual student’s educational goals whether it be the Certificate of Completion program or the two-year Associates Degree Program. The Certificate of Completion offers students the opportunity to earn a certificate and enhance their employment possibilities within one academic school year. The Associates Degree Program offers students the opportunity to earn an associates degree within two academic school years.

South Texas Vo-Tech’s primary mission is to instruct students to such competency levels that they are qualified for employment and/or advancement in existing or potential career fields. Skills and experience gained at South Texas Vo-Tec provide the tools necessary for success and provide the competitive edge very much needed in today’s saturated job market. With an enrollment of 210 at the Weslaco campus, students are given the opportunity to further their education with various programs such as computer office, computer accounting, medical office and legal office specialists.
